Piha Kahetta Dagger / Knife from Sri Lanka - 6291

This type of knife / dagger is called “PIHA KAHETTA”, and it is the traditional knife of the Sinhalese from Sri-Lanka (Ceylon). It always has a single edged short heavy down curving blade, and the hilt is elaborately decorated in various techniques of decorative arts. This specific example has a thick blade 7 inches long, but only about 5 inches of the blade length has an edge, the rest is elaborately chiseled in a beautiful floral design. The bolster itself is brass, also chiseled in a similar design. The grips are made from dark brown horn, engraved and set with chased silver mounts. Wood scabbard with silver locket. The condition is very good. The blade shows a very nice daerk and shining age patina but no pitting. This is a VERY RARE piece in good condition and a very interesting addition to any collection. |
